^* The word "soros" for sorority is Latin for "sister." The first such women's group to organize, separate from a men's fraternity, was the I.C. Sorosis at Monmouth College in 1867, but did not assume its Greek name of Pi Beta Phi until 1888.

The first Greek-letter women's fraternities were Kappa Alpha Theta, founded at what is now DePauw University, in Indiana, and Kappa Kappa Gamma, organized at Monmouth College, both in 1870.

The "Monmouth Duo" is a celebration held at colleges and universities with active Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma chapters in recognition of their founding at Monmouth!
